MASCOT - GNC-Sensor

Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR)

1. Purpose
This specification establishes the requirements for the optical GNC sensor of the "Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout" (MASCOT).
1.1 MASCOT
The general concept of the "Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout" (MASCOT) is to provide a small landing system intended to be deployed from a supporting main spacecraft (main-SC) on an asteroid sample return mission. It is specifically designed to be compatible with JAXA´s Hayabusa 2 (HY2) mission design and the environment given by the target asteroid 1999JU3.
Two major mission phases can be defined for MASCOT: A cruise phase, attached to the main-SC, lasting about 4 years, and a nominal phase, detached from the main-SC, lasting about 16 hours.
1.2 MASCOT GNC functionality
MASCOT will be dropped from the Hayabusa 2 mothership and will touch the asteroids surface after a free-fall phase of about 30 min. After the first contact with the asteroid MASCOT may bounce several times and come to rest 60 min (worst case) thereafter. MASCOT has the capability to flip over if it comes to rest on the wrong side.
The task of the GNC system is to detect the motion state (free-fall, moving or rest), the side on which MASCOT is lying when at rest and the distance to ground in the case the side is not lying flat on the surface.
The GNC system can be divided in two parts: The GNC sensors (hardware) and the GNC algorithms (software) running on the on-board computer.
This ITT includes the GNC sensor hardware only. The software algorithm will be done by DLR.
A feasibility study has been conducted for the GNC sensor hardware. The best feasible concept is based on an optical triangulation measurement principle. The emitting component is an 800nm LED with no collimator lens. The receiving part is based on a reflective optical design with a position sensitive device (PSD) as sensing component.
2. Requirements
2.1 General
The following margin policy shall be apply be the contractor.
2.1.1 Mass margins
Every piece of equipment is given a margin on mass based on its maturity. The contractor shall apply one of the three levels based on the following definition:
— 5 % for fully developed items,
— 10 % for items to be modified,
— 20 % for items to be developed.
There is no system margin to be applied on the GNC sensor sytem.
2.1.2 Power margins
At equipment level the following margin on the power consumption shall be applied:
— 5 % for OTS equipment,
— 10 % for OTS parts to be modified,
— 20 % for items to be developed.
The contractor shall deliver an Engineering Model (EM) and a Protoflight Model. The EM shall be functional equal and thermal and structural representative to the Protoflight Model.
Project Milestones:
— Kick-off meeting,
— Preliminary design review,
— Delivery of EM in February 2013,
— Critical design review,
— Delivery of Protoflight Model in June 2013.
