Command and Data Handling Subsystem (CDH) for Compact Satellite Eu:CROPIS

German Aerospace Center

Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space (DLR) has decided to establish a compact satellite program in order to support internal development and research activities.
In this context, a standard satellite bus has been developed until C/D maturity which is now being adapted to individual scientific application fields. Presently exploration missions regarding biological experiments preparing manned exploration missions are in the focus of consideration.
The investigated science case leads to following relevant mission parameters:
Launch Date: Beginning 2016
Mission Duration: appr. 2 Years
Final Orbit: 500 – 630, SSO, LTAN:0600 (SSO LTAN preferred but not necessary)
The PDR is scheduled for December 2013.
In this context and in preparation of the ITT DLR is in the process of the assessment of potential suppliers for the COMMAND AND DATA HANDLING SUBSYSTEM (CDH).
The CDH is one of the core components of the Eu:CROPIS satellite mission and is part of the compact satellite bus. It is the central instance for processing telecommands and generating telemetry, and for supervision and control of the satellite system, including executing algorithms for attitude determination and control. The CDH will consist of a central, redundant on-board computer, which provides interfaces to sensors, actuators, communication equipment, the power control and distribution unit, and the payloads.
The main features of the CDH are:
- single failure tolerance
- accommodation in a single box
- data storage capacity of at least 260 MByte [tbc] for downlink data
- data storage capacity for on-board software
- operation from an unregulated bus voltage (28 V)
- maximum weight of 15 kg (+/- 20 %)
- maximum external envelope of 320 mm x 170 mm x 180 mm (L x W x H)
- at least 24 [tbc] RS-422 compatile UART interfaces to each of the redundant OBCs
- at least 10 [tbc] RS-422 compatible digital input interfaces to each of the redundant OBCs
- at least 106 [tbc] analog inputs, which are multiplexed to each of the redundant OBCs
- forward error correction (CCSDS) on the transmitter interface
- CLTU handling (CCSDS) on coding layer (BCH) on the receiver interface
- cold redundant OBC
- redundancy management is carried out in CDH via internal power supply
Deliverable items:
- Software development model (t_0 + 1 Month [tbc])
- structural/thermal model (t_0 + 6 months)
- engineering model (t_0 + 12 months)
- flight model (t_0 + 18 months)
