Power Conditioning and Distribution Unit (PCDU) for Compact Satellite Eu:CROPIS
Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space (DLR) has decided to establish a compact satellite program in order to support internal development and research activities.
In this context, a standard satellite bus has been developed until C/D maturity which is now being adapted to individual scientific application fields. Presently missions regarding biological experiments preparing manned exploration missions are in the focus of consideration.
The investigated science case leads to following relevant mission parameters:
Launch Date: beginning 2016.
Mission Duration: appr. 2 years.
Final Orbit: 500 – 630, SSO, LTAN: 0600 (SSO LTAN preferred but not necessary)
The PDR is scheduled for December 2013.
In this context and in preparation of the ITT DLR is in the process of the assessment of potential suppliers for the Power Conditioning and Distribution Unit (PCDU).
The functionalities of the PCDU include:
– activation of the satellite based on signal from the launch vehicle adapter;
– conversion of the power generated from the solar arrays into a suitable voltage and current range for the unregulated satellite bus (range: 22-34 V, nominal voltage 28 V). The required solar array power is expected to be approximately 450 W during the sunlit phase of the mission;
– provision of a regulated 5 V bus for units not compatible with the unregulated bus voltage;
– management of the distribution of power to the satellite units. The total number of units connected is expected to be approximately 50-60, with a current limitation between 1 and 4 A;
– management of the battery charging process (Li-ion battery is foreseen);
– provision of a TM/TC interface using a redundant RS422 serial interface.
The PCDU is expected to have the maximum dimensions of 320 mm x 350 mm x 180 mm with a mass of approximately 6 kg.
The ITT for the PCDU is expected to include the following delivery items:
– PCDU STM with a lead time of 6 months,
– PCDU EM with a lead time of 12 months,
– PCDU FM with a lead time of 18 months,
– documentation package.
