Superconducting wire for dipoles of Super FRS

FAIR — Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe GmbH

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), located near Darmstadt (Germany) next to the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH area, is a new international accelerator and experimental facility for basic research with antiprotons and ions.
A key installation of FAIR is the Super-FRS (Fragment-Separator), which will generate intensive secondary beams of rare isotopes and will be used for example by the Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics and Reactions (NUSTAR) experiment They should clarify relevant details of the nuclear configuration of the abundance of heavy elements, new knowledge about the interior of neutron stars and other unsolved astrophysical puzzles.
For the manufacturing of the dipole magnets of the Super-Fragment-Separator superconducting strand is needed.
Total quantity or scope:
250 km of superconductor are needed for the manufacturing of the Dipoles of the Super-FRS. The conductor is of a wire in channel type with a round multifilamentary NbTi Superconductor soldered into a copper bar. Main parameters of the conductor are:
— Outer dimensions (bare) ~ 1.93 x 1.17 mm²
— Outer dimensions (insulated) ~ 2.23 x 1.43 mm²
— Filament size: <70 μm
— Ic (4.2K, 4 T): >700 A
— Cu/SC ratio: ~ 9
— RRR >80
— Unit length: 4800 m.
