The scope of work is to design, manufacture, test and deliver 16 collimators (5x ColA and 11x ColB) for the beam transport system of the European XFEL. For further details please refer to sec. 2 ‘Scope of work’ in the Specifications. Conceptual design review (CDR) and final design review (FDR) are required.
Collimators in beam transport system in European XFEL are the fixed apertures that define possible beam paths and protect downstream components. They cannot be moved remotely, some collimators are part of the personnel safety system.
The complete design should be finished in one month after signing the contract. Six months after the contract is awarded, the collimators should be ready for delivery.

According to the functionality, the 16 (5x ColA and 11x ColB) collimators located in three photon beamlines can be defined in two main types:Type A (ColA) — B4C collimator + Tungsten collimator with burn-through monitor function: These collimators are part of the personnel safety system. Typically they consist of three units: a B4C collimator with 3 cm Long B4C piece, a burn-through monitor unit and a tungsten collimator with 20 cm long tungsten (or alloy Densimet) piece. In case the FEL beam destroys the B4C piece, a burn-through monitor should create a vacuum leak and ultimately shut down the accelerator, before the tungsten can be destroyed. The effective thickness of the tungsten is defined by radiation safety requirements.Type B (ColB) — B4C collimator: These collimators are designed to protect the downstream devices against missteered FEL beams and background spontaneous radiation. These collimators only consist of B4C, no burn-though function or minimum tungsten thickness is required. In case of complete failure or absence, there should be no effects on the personnel safety.
