Benin is one of the poorest countries in the world. In the Human Development Index (UN 2015) it ranked 166th out of 187 countries. To combat poverty, Benin drew up its first national Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) in 2003. The third strategy (GPRS 2011-2015) concentrated on the promotion of pro-poor economic growth as an instrument for reducing poverty. Following the change of government in 2016 and limited effects of the previous PRS, the follow up strategy of the PRS (2018 -2022) is being directly integrated into the long term national development plan of Benin thereby putting a stronger emphasis on the implementation of the Agenda 2030. Against this background, the GIZ project ‘Macroeconomic advisory for poverty reduction’ supports the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning with the implementation of the Agenda 2030 in the area of macroeconomic modelling, provision of statistical data, public investment, impact assessments and budgetary frameworks.
