The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is working on the development of a superconducting electron source (SRF gun) for about 15 years. An integral part of this electron source is a photocathode laser which, in combination with a photocathode, uses the external photoelectric effect to generate electron pulses. These pulses are then accelerated by the electric field of the superconducting RF resonator. The required laser wavelength for this purpose is about 260 nm and the UV pulse energy needs to be between 1 to 10 μJ. Since the laser pulse length is an important optimisation parameter, it should be adjustable in the range of 1-10ps (RMS). On the other hand, the laser repetition rate needs to be 100 kHz, 1 MHz and 13 MHz, because the electron bunches have to be generated continuously. The overall average power in the UV is thus at least 1W.

Beschreibung der Beschaffung
Since no suitable industrial lasers were available at the beginning of the project 15 years ago, an in-house development of the Max-Born Institute in Berlin is still in use. But due to the advances in laser development, the time has come to procure a robust and commercially available UV laser system. This, because of the purpose to produce electrons out of a cathode, differs significantly in some aspects from those for industrial applications such as laser micromachining. The most important feature is the synchronisation of the laser oscillator with an external RF reference, which is derived from the extremely stable master clock of the accelerator. The so achievable pulse-to-pulse time jitter of the laser must not exceed a few 100 fs. In this context, a possibility is also required to shift the laser in time with respect to the aforementioned RF reference. The needed resolution is about 100 fs. This is necessary to select the exact time at which the laser pulse hits the cathode while the RF field for electron acceleration is changing in time. A corresponding phase shifter has to have digital interface for integration into our accelerator control system, same is needed for laser status / error and control bits.
Since the electrons are accelerated to their final energy in the superconducting linear accelerator ELBE, it is important from a operational point of view that any desired pulse pattern can be triggered. In detail, single pulses and pulse trains (duration of 0.1-40ms and periods between 40-1 000 ms) are required. Ideally, there are two external triggers available. The first one to set the laser rep. rate (0.1 MHz, 1 MHz up to 13MHz) and a second one for "pulse picking" out of the pulse train, e.g. single pulses to few 10 kHz out of the 100 kHz. This pulse picking should work in a way that the accelerators control and timing system just sets a flag for the next pulse that should be coupled out, but the exact timing is realised by the laser electronic!
All other requirements on the laser largely correspond to those that are typical for industrial applications as well. Thus, the reliability and the permanent availability (24/7) is of particular importance. This requires maximum industrial robustness as well as a safe and sealed system for user operation at the accelerator. Nevertheless, also UV power (> 1W) is important but it needs to be balanced with lifetime of the UV conversion crystals (e.g. L80, 2 000h).
The service to be offered in the offer price includes:
— Factory acceptance test (FAT), with proof of fulfilment of the performance requirements
