The service provider will be in charge of providing and managing international and national short-term experts for policy advice together with capacity development, contributing to the field of enhancing governance capacities of the Ministry of Environment for hazardous waste management.
In this context, the service provider, in close coordination with the local GIZ team, shall be taking over the following tasks, starting the signature of the contract until the end of January 2020:
(a) stocktaking of available figures on hazardous wastes quantities in Jordan and its impact on the environment,
(b) providing technical input to the Ministry of Environment on how to reach more generators, defining the content of awareness campaigns and providing information on status quo of hazardous waste management and enforcement in the region and on a global scale,
(c) trainings for staff from the Ministry of Environment as well as the royal department for environmental protection (rangers) to strengthen the capacities for monitoring of hazardous waste during the whole disposal procedure.

Protection of the Environment and Biodiversity in Jordan (PROTEB II)

Growing pressure is being placed on Jordan's environment due to population growth and economic development, which has increased significantly with the influx of refugees from neighbouring countries. Loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, improper use of natural resources, and water are challenges that are further exacerbated by high levels of environmental degradation from increased quantities of waste, polluted air, and wastewater generated by industry and agriculture. In order to overcome such challenges, the Ministry of Environment was established in 2003 and designated overarching responsibility for environmental conservation and protection.

The objective of “Protection of the Environment and Biodiversity in Jordan (PROTEB II) project is to increase the capacity of the Ministry of Environment for policy-making” and management. For this purpose, measures will be implemented across four fields of activity:

1) Increasing the capacity of the Ministry of Environment to prioritise environmental legislation for further development and implementation;

2) Enhancing environmental monitoring to serve as a solid and transparent basis for decision-making;

3) Improving cooperation with non-governmental organisations, the private sector, other state institutions and including local governments;

4) Enhancing governance capacities of the Ministry of Environment for hazardous waste management.

The project runs until end of February 2020.
