Modular Extension of the IPP Flywheel Generator Power Supply. A modular extension of the IPP pulsed power supply at Garching, by means of commercially available compact flywheel generators, shall be realised to meet the future demand of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (up to about 80 MW/360 MWs). Each energy storage unit (ESU) shall consist of the parallel connection of several flywheel-generators and a step-up transformer for connection to the IPP 10,5 kV (110-85 Hz) pulsed grid. The new system is specified for operation in stand-alone mode and in parallel to the existing large flywheel generators. In all modes of operation the new system must be capable of supplying dynamic loads without stability problems. The first step of extension shall comprise one (optional two) ESU(s). It shall involve two stages of activity: A design stage and the manufacture, factory testing, delivery, installation and commissioning stage. The nominal (short-time) power of each ESU shall be at least 8 MW. A total energy of 30-50 MJ shall be deliverable at network frequencies ranging from, 110 Hz to 85 Hz. The ESUs shall be designed for a 4-60 second pulse in any five minute period of operation, 10-12 hours of operation per day, 300 days of operation per year, 20 000 full discharges, and a service life of approximately 20 years.
