Refurbishment of the Facade of Building D

European Space Operations Centre

Based in Darmstadt, ESOC, the European Space Operations Centre, is an establishment of the European Space Agency. ESOC ensures the smooth operation of orbiting ESA satellites and manages an in-house network of eight worldwide tracking stations. On site the D building is an operational building, hosting control rooms for the satellite operations, a data centre for the computers and communications that support the satellite systems, test and development facilities, a training room and offices for the operations staff. Despite an asbestos removal project in the 1990s, the facade of building D still contains asbestos. Due to the high sensitivity of this building and the need for continuous availability of the operational facilities, it is intended to remove this asbestos while keeping the facilities running. First and foremost a complete facade rehabilitation harmful substances decontamination concept isto be developed by an official expert for the environment engineering management. An official site supervision of an expert for the environmental engineering management is to be provided. He needs to be certified accordingly to supervise the asbestos and AMF removal properly. The facade works âEUR“ including all necessary works and precautions in the offices and other rooms - will require carefulplanning and a segment-by-segment approach in 4 phases that minimises the operational impact. Primary details (Leitdetails) of the new facade will give an indication of the outlook of the new facade. They show the intended glass material to be used as well as thegeneral design of the facade elevations. In order to install this new facade a complete execution planning is necessary. It is expected that a facade planner will be engaged if the resources cannot be covered directly by the contractor.
