Refurbishment and Extension to: The Goethe Institute, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, Ireland

Federal Republic of Germany represented by the Federal Ministry for the Enviroment, Nature Conversation, Building and Nuclear Sa

The Goethe Institute is currently split between the building at 37 Merrion Square which houses the cultural programmes and another house on Fitzwilliam Square which is used as the language school. The institute wishes to relocate both functions to their Merrion Square premises.
In order to house the language school on the site a significant garden extension to the rear of the Georgian house will be required.
The house at 37 Merrion Square was designed most likely by Samuel Sproule Architect and built between 1780 and 1786. The original house is generally in good repair and has been in the ownership of the Goethe Institute since 1982. The mews and original garden, however have been removed for the last 70-80 years and the rear of the site is now used as a car-park. The house is a protected structure.
The proposal as described in the documents attached is to restore the existing building to the highest possible standards, while addressing where possible improvements which might allow for greater access for the disabled and greater energy efficiency. The functional use of the existing building will remain largely unchanged. Some minor re-organisation of the top floor will provide for a re-organisation for the Institute's administration team and a café is proposed for the basement level which currently houses plant, storage and WCs. The existing building fabric will be refurbished throughout to the highest conservation standards.
The new build in the garden consists of a sub-parterre level over most of the site which is a half level above Stephens Place to the rear, with a split level three storey mews above and with Podium garden at ground floor Level and with podium garden at ground floor Level. This building will house the relocated language school.
Formally; the extension building will consist of a brick base with slurry render finish with a unitised curtain walling façade to a ‘glass box' on the upper levels. The main.
