Preliminary cabin air quality (CAQ) measurement campaign
The quality of the air that passengers and air crews are exposed to on board commercial transport aeroplanes has been the basis of a continuing debate over the last 60 years, both from the health and safety points of view. Discussions about cabin or cockpit air quality (CAQ) need to differentiate between single cabin/cockpit air contamination (CAC) events (e.g. events which result in a potential short-term peak of cabin air contamination) and the cabin air composition in normal operating conditions (e.g. the composition of cabin air in the absence of any abnormal event which can be compared, for instance, to the composition of the outside air or to the air at other workplaces).
A large-scale project, including an in-flight measurement campaign, is envisaged in the near future, on board commercially operated large transport aeroplanes. In order to prepare this large-scale campaign, the Agency has decided to launch a preliminary in-flight measurement campaign. This preliminary measurement campaign is intended to put into place the adequate instrumentation to perform cabin/cockpit air contamination measurements, as well as to perform a first flight campaign which will provide some first indications of the cabin or cockpit air quality level. The large-scale campaign will benefit from the preliminary campaign and reuse the validated material and lessons learnt.
